Founders ride in Elux Marine Fiberglass Pontoon

Our Story

ELUX Marine was started by two friends – medical device entrepreneur Howard Root and boat craftsman Bart Jones – to bring a new concept to boating. One that’s fresh. Quiet. Trouble-free. Electric.

Starting in the early 1990’s, Bart was in the business of renovating and building power boats in his shop in Mayer, Minnesota. One of those boats was a cabin cruiser Howard purchased in St. Louis and brought up the Mississippi River to boat on Lake Minnetonka.

As Bart’s boat renovation business grew, he became interested in the concept of electric powered watercraft. That interest led Bart in 2008 to develop the Go-Float – a line of two-person electric sun loungers – that is still being sold today.

Over the next decade, improvements in lithium batteries accelerated, making electric vehicles a reality. By 2013, Bart was able to begin designing a full-sized electric pontoon, starting with a simple question: What if a pontoon didn’t look like a pontoon? In his design, Bart sought to create a 100% electric pontoon that was tailored for Minnesota lake cruising but was also sleek and stylish.

Fast forward to early 2017 when Howard sold his medical device company and, looking for his next business challenge, began to collaborate with Bart on his electric pontoon concept. Later that year, Bart and Howard successfully completed and tested their first engineering prototype, leading to forming ELUX Marine in early 2018 with the mission to bring their electric luxury pontoon boat to market.

Now, one year later, the result of Howard and Bart’s collaboration is available for your boating enjoyment with the new ELUX electric luxury fiberglass pontoon.
